Tongue Tie Lactation Consultations Online

Support Right At Home

Tongue tie interferes with breastfeeding your baby, and it’s been widely misdiagnosed and underdiagnosed in the medical field for years. Pediatricians aren’t specially trained in tongue ties and not every lactation consultant is either — which makes your life harder as a parent.

I’m Katie, an IBCLC, providing expert breastfeeding support for your tongue tied baby. I have over 20 years of experience in maternal-infant medicine as a nurse and specialize in treating tongue ties.

A tongue tie causes a limited range of motion for the tongue because a piece of small tissue underneath the tongue (lingual frenulum) attaches to the bottom of the mouth more than it should be.

Bodywork, oral exercises, rhythmic movements, and releases are all important aspects of treating tongue ties. I’m here to guide you with resources, knowledge, and solutions that work for your family.

What A Tongue Tie Lactation Consult Includes

I know for a fact YOU know your baby best — I’m ready to listen and learn about your pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Plus, any concerns you have and what you’ve been struggling with.

  • Full Physical Assessment

Assessing the anatomy and function of your baby's mouth is essential when diagnosing a tongue tie. But we go far beyond that because the tongue affects tension, symmetry, and reflexes. This also gives us insight into symptoms and how to help your baby to the fullest.

  • Breast & Milk Supply Assessment

Has your supply dropped? It’s not uncommon when your baby has a tongue tie because they can’t effectively latch and remove milk from your breast. When you’re suffering from recurrent breast issues like mastitis, plugged ducts, blebs, pain, and more, it’s important we create a plan for your care too.

  • Pre & Post Procedure Support

Both are beneficial in a tongue tie journey and give your baby the best chance of success. I’ve been specially trained in tongue tie oral rehabilitation, which makes me an expert. Pre and post exercises can make or break your tongue tie journey, believe me! As a parent, knowing what to expect eases your concerns, and learning how to help your baby after only empowers you more.

  • Provider Collaboration

Tongue tie procedures require experts, and I know a slew of them! Since I’ve been traveling the country (literally), I’ve met hundreds of specialists who care for tongue ties. We’ll work together for the optimal timing on a tongue tie release because this is essential for ideal healing and function. I connect you with the best, closest medical care to ease your stress. My care doesn’t end at giving you a referral. I work with the other providers and coordinate care to optimize results. Leave the research up to me, and we’ll all work together to help your family.

BONUS: 2 weeks of email and text support — because I’m here to make your life easier! Your questions and concerns are answered quickly to ease your worries.

I’ll Guide Your Baby’s Tongue Tie Journey.

Mom holding sleeping baby

I am a first time mom living in the Bay Area. My son and I started working with Katie via telehealth when my son was 2.5 months old. He dropped weight percentiles at his 2 month appointment and I desperately needed to figure out his feeding issues. We were doing a combo of formula and breastfeeding at the time, although breastfeeding was a challenge. Katie helped me understand that my son likely had a tongue tie, then she referred me to a specialist in the area and after a consult, we decided to get it lasered. She was a huge support through the process, including guidance on the post procedure exercises. The whole process was was very emotional and not easy, so having someone with Katie’s warm, patient, non-judgemental demeanor was critical. My son is now 7 months old and eating and gaining weight as expected. The tongue tie turned out to be a huge issue and I’m happy we got it take care of as soon as we finally had someone point us in the right direction. It’s important to have a good team helping you and your baby, and Katie was an valuable asset on our team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you sure it’s a tongue tie if my pediatrician or another lactation consultant said it wasn’t?

I don’t like how often I’m right, believe me, but it’s possible. It’s sad how frequently parents don’t get answers when it comes to tongue tie from dentists, pediatricians, and other lactation consultants. A functional assessment provides knowledge behind the severity of the tongue tie. Since our visit is virtual, parents get to see it firsthand with my guidance.

What makes you different than other IBCLCs?

I’m always taking additional classes and working with tongue tie specialists all over the US. I took a specific Oral Habilitation Master Class making me an expert in all types of oral ties and have proudly helped hundreds of families, (ask any IBCLC you’re thinking of working with about this class!). Interestingly, both my girls had tongue ties as babies (2009 and 2012) and just had releases recently! Now all the gas, puking, and crying when they were babies makes sense. I even had my own tongue tie released at 44 years old and finally experienced relief from my reflux! I have firsthand experience as a mom, nurse, patient and IBCLC who’s helped hundreds of families with tongue tie.

Is there anything we can do to avoid a tongue tie procedure?

I’m always here to support parents and completely understand wanting to avoid a procedure on your baby if you can. Bodywork, oral exercises, and rhythmic movements can greatly impact oral function and are always an option.

I think of it like this — anyone could learn how to use two fingers fused together if they had no choice, but it’s not giving the best overall function for those two fingers. If the tongue doesn’t have the needed range of motion, a positive outcome might be harder to achieve.
