The truth about poop
We may always be comfortable talking about poop, but once you have a baby it becomes a big part of the conversation. And our poop tells us so much about our health, how we are feeling and what’s working for our body.
All animals poop. Food goes in and waste goes out. Poop is a way to not only get rid of what our body didn’t need, but also to get rid of toxins, hormones, bacteria and more. Our gut is made of millions and millions of bacteria 🦠 hopefully yours is more good than bad bacteria.
All humans should poop multiple times a day. With a normal amount of food intake, including fiber, poop should happen after each meal. So that means if you eat 3x a day, you should poop 3x a day! A normal transit time is 12-24 hours.
Now for babies there is a ridiculous amount of misinformation being passed around. In the last few weeks I have heard these statements that my clients were told by other practitioners:
-Babies don’t make wast because they are so efficient
-Babies can go 1, 2 even 3 WEEKS without pooping and be fine
-Blood or mucous in the poop means CMPA
-Babies straining to poop is normal
Let’s be clear- NONE of that is true!! If an infant is breastfed and has a health gut, they will poop many times a day, the normal average is after each mean which would mean 8-12 times a day!! Not pooping regularly doesn’t mean a baby has allergies or that you should remove food from your diet. There are many things that can be causing poop issues.
Let’s normalize talking about poop! Babies should be pooping multiple times a day, and if your baby isn’t, please reach out for support!!
