 The Traveling Lactation Consultant Podcast

Katie Oshita (she/her) is a nurse, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Registered Nurse (RN), wife, and mother of two. After struggling with breastfeeding her own children and being dismissed by providers who said everything was "normal," Katie saw firsthand how many families lacked meaningful, compassionate support.

In 2019, Katie opened her private practice to give families the time, attention, and holistic options. She specializes in oral function and tongue tie, gut health, and root cause medicine, working with parents to create personalized plans that support both parent and baby. Katie is committed to providing safe, effective, and compassionate care that empowers families to meet their feeding goals.

Katie’s specialized education & training includes: tongue tie courses including the Oral Habilitation Master Class and Tongue Tie Academy, Gut health and Functional Medicine, Bottle Refusal, Low Milk Supply and Holistic Lactation Residency. Katie attends conferences (like ICAP in 2026) to collaborate with other providers and is constantly taking classes and learning to support families.

Katie’s clients say:

“Katie was a huge help to me when I was struggling with breastfeeding my new baby. She was so reassuring. The support and solutions she provided made me feel like I didn't have to give up. She is clearly very knowledgeable in her field and made virtual appointments very easy.”

-Mary

“Katie is amazing! Incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and thorough. She got me quickly back on track after a painful start to nursing, helped with latching, finding new more comfortable positions, and came up with a pumping plan for when I return to work. I would highly recommend her to anyone in need of a lactation consultant!”

An insta-famous IBCLC recommended Katie to me after I spent months trying to find an IBCLC that took my insurance. I'm so grateful to Katie for her expertise. She successfully made assessments about my daughter via telehealth visits (great for flexibility) and provided thorough care plan notes. Another great thing about Katie is her devotion to education. I always say a good LC knows more than all the medical professionals and that is Katie! My doctors had it wrong but Katie was on point and thus validated my mother's intuition. I appreciate that she makes the effort to accept insurance as well because lactation support is so critical to mothers. I definitely recommend working with Katie.

-Camille

“Katie’s an outstanding lactation consultant. Our daughter struggled to gain weight and was fussy during her first 2.5 months of life. We saw two lactation consultants (in-person) and two pediatricians who weren't able to help us. We're so grateful that a friend referred us to Katie. Katie was able to quickly diagnose that our daughter had a tongue and lip tie during our virtual session. She was incredibly helpful every step of the way for the release and then rehab post-treatment. Katie was invaluable to our family in continuing our breastfeeding journey. Our daughter quickly gained weight and is still breastfeeding now at 7 months. We are so, so very grateful to have found Katie.”

If I could give Katie ten stars, I would. As a first time mom I didn’t know much about my milk supply or even how to breastfeed my baby really, there’s more to it than most people think.. I’m so grateful to Katie for taking the time to come to my home to not only help teach me the best way to feed my son and educate me on my supply(how to main it, good foods to eat, supplements that help), but she’s given me amazing references to people in my area that help with tongue ties and body work. She’s incredibly knowledgeable in so many different areas, I can’t recommend her enough!

If you are an experienced breastfeeding mom or new to the entire process and not sure where to start or not even sure if you need a lactation consultant; book an appointment.

The internet is not the best place to learn how to measure for a pump flange. According to it I was a much larger size than I actually am which could have been detrimental to my breastfeeding journey.

Katie will measure you, teach you why you need the size you do, help set you up on a pump, and teach you the types of flanges best suited for the shape of your breast.

For my first two sons I had no issue breastfeeding. By the time my third came along, I thought I was an expert, which was not the case. He struggled with latch, I didn’t seek out help. I pumped with an ill fitting flange, which set into motion a slow train wreck that ended with me with Raynaud’s syndrome, (which is poor circulation in my nipples) extremely painful, my doctor prescribed a nitroglycerin ointment which forced me to quit breastfeeding altogether.

As I prepared for the birth of my fourth son I reached out to Katie to try to prevent any of the missteps I took previously.

I discussed my fears and concerns and she taught me different homeopathic ways to help prevent Raynaud’s this go around and options to treat it should it arise.

I am so grateful for her knowledge, understanding, and guidance and wish I would have reached out to her on my third child.

My fourth is now here, I am armed with all she taught me and I’m happy to say that I am successfully breastfeeding once again pain free.

If you have any concerns about breastfeeding don’t turn to your doctor go straight to the experts on the matter. It will help save your breastfeeding experience with your child.

Katie is probably the most knowledgeable person about breast-feeding I have ever met. She helped me with positioning, latch, and even increasing my supply. She followed up every meeting with a Care Plan to help me and my baby make progress in our journey before the next visit. I highly recommend her as an expert lactation specialist who is flexible and easy to schedule due to being remote and the best part is she is covered by most insurances and takes HSA for the copay! -Lindsey

“Angel sent from above! Katie literally saved us after our twins were born and had trouble putting on weight. We saw multiple lactation consultants and pediatricians. But it was Katie’s time, experience, and expert advice that allowed me to continue to exclusively breastfeed my girls and help them to put on weight! She’s the whole package —- former NICU and labor & delivery nurse turned lactation consultation, with inpatient and outpatient experience! She is also a mom herself so she knows firsthand the struggles of breastfeeding. Not only was Katie's clinical advice right on point but her compassion and understanding are just what a new or experienced mom needs during her breastfeeding journey.”

-Megan

“Katie’s exactly how a provider and lactation consultant should be. She asked questions and LISTENED, with her whole heart and mind. We weren’t a number or a protocol, but a unique mama and baby who needed help with our breastfeeding journey. I was most impressed with her knowledge of oral ties and how to navigate pre and post-care of a tie revision procedure. She checked in on us often, constantly reminded me to give myself grace being newly postpartum, and gave us all the tools we need for a successful breastfeeding journey. We are 2.5 months in currently, and I have no doubt we have so much beauty ahead. She has helped me to love nursing my baby instead of being afraid of it — like I was with my first. My husband thought she was exceptional too!”

-Brittany

“Katie was very helpful in making recommendations and providing great advice when my baby had trouble latching. Just a few visits were all it took! Katie’s very warm, and I would highly recommend her IBCLC services to any struggling mom. My baby girl is 4 months now and breastfeeding is a breeze — I love it!”

Working with Katie truly changed our lives. I began working with her about 2 weeks postpartum and she’s been with me ever since (we are now almost 10 months postpartum). I was struggling quite a bit in the early stages of motherhood and Katie provided support and education to help our daughter AND she make my health, happiness and well being an equally important priority of care. Katie made me feel seen and heard and saw me as my own person and not just a new mom. I appreciate that she provides telehealthcare as it makes her so much more accessible and the quality of care was unmatched. She was quick to respond and always made the effort to support and do her own learning to help provide more person-specific care. She helped me advocate for myself and for my daughter. She shared her opinion that our daughter had a tongue tie, recommended a top doctor in the field and supported us through the process of getting it released and the aftercare. That was a HUGE turning point for my daughters and my journey. I reference insight Katie has shared often and am so grateful she is in our life! I would give her a thousand stars if possible!

I am a first time mom living in the Bay Area. My son and I started working with Katie via telehealth when my son was 2.5 months old. He dropped weight percentiles at his 2 month appointment and I desperately needed to figure out his feeding issues. We were doing a combo of formula and breastfeeding at the time, although breastfeeding was a challenge. Katie helped me understand that my son likely had a tongue tie, then she referred me to a specialist in the area and after a consult, we decided to get it lasered. She was a huge support through the process, including guidance on the post procedure exercises. The whole process was was very emotional and not easy, so having someone with Katie’s warm, patient, non-judgemental demeanor was critical. My son is now 7 months old and eating and gaining weight as expected. The tongue tie turned out to be a huge issue and I’m happy we got it take care of as soon as we finally had someone point us in the right direction. It’s important to have a good team helping you and your baby, and Katie was an valuable asset on our team.

Katie is an awesome lactation consultant. Very knowledgeable and experienced with tongue tie babies. Katie carefully listens to the parents concerns and has a holistic approach to help the family to achieve their feeding goals. Meeting Katie truly safe my breastfeeding journey and my family is forever grateful that we crossed paths.

“I came to Katie after struggling with oversupply, that made it nearly impossible to nurse my baby. Her expertise, support and kindness helped my daughter and I get through a very difficult time. She provided invaluable information which ultimately brought down my supply and allowed me to continue to breastfeed. ”

— Jess

“I owe so many thanks to Katie for helping me. My daughter was still not taking a bottle at 8 months. We tried 6-7 bottles and took classes about how to get your baby to take a bottle — nothing worked. I work full time from home and could no longer sustain breastfeeding and having a full-time job. Katie changed everything. We skipped the bottle entirely and went straight to the honey bear bottle with a straw, and it worked! It took us 3 days to get consistency with our daughter, but now she drinks from the cup, and our lives are changed! I wish I would have found Katie earlier and would recommend her to anyone struggling with transitioning from breast to bottle/cup.”

-Kelly

I cannot say enough about how special Katie is. She was the first person to help discover my son's lip tie. I had gone to four pediatricians and saw three lactation consultants when my son was an infant. I had the worst time breastfeeding and knew something was wrong, yet all of them said he had nothing wrong with him anatomically. Katie and I met at her breastfeeding support group when my son was 20 months old. She instantly knew what was wrong. She referred me to the expert in the bay area to have his mouth examined. This morning he had a frenectomy and this afternoon he breastfed for the first time with complete suction. I am so grateful to Katie. Without her expert current knowledge my son would never have been able to feel comfortable breastfeeding, having his teeth brushed, or eating certain foods.

Katie is one of those business women who is constantly seeking out the most current and up-to-date research so that she can best serve her clients. She also works hard to meet people in related businesses so that she can be part of a community. She truly has such a big heart and only wants to make sure all new mothers and babies are fed and happy! I wish deeply I had met her when my son was first born. I urge you to meet Katie and have her check out you and your baby. She always has advice on how to help make breastfeeding more comfortable and enjoyable! You wont regret you did!!!

-Julie

Having a child changes your world- it's amazing how one tiny little baby can confuse your mind- MOM BRAIN is real!

Katie is amazing-she has the expertise to help you and at the same time, she meets you where you are at.  Meaning- she will work with you with what you are comfortable with doing.  And as a sleep deprived new mom- you don't need anyone pushing their agenda on you- you need someone who is going to help you breast feed your way.

She is a wealth of knowledge on all matters related to babies.  If you are a new mom- and considering breastfeeding- KATIE is a must have on your squad!

-Denise

Katie was very knowledgeable and she gave great recommendations, resources and referrals. I would definitely recommend seeing her, especially if you are a first time mom.

-Natalia

Katie is extraordinary. She gave me all the clues I needed to solve my lactation challenges and beyond. I feel blessed I could count on her help. Highly recommend her!

-Liliana

Katie came as a recommendation from my (very wise!) IBCLC who was stumped on some issues we were having with my daughter post oral ties revision. We did not get the results we were hoping for after the revision and my daughter continued to have trouble gaining weight, reflux, and quite a bit of pain with breastfeeding. We had been to a few different body workers and doing all that the IBCLC recommended. When I first met with Katie, I was so impressed at her knowledge regarding oral ties and her holistic approach ensuring that all factors were considered. We were evaluating whether or not we were going to need another revision, which I truly was trying to avoid. With my goals in mind, Katie was able to provide us with a variety of very practical exercises, homeopathy recommendations, and support to help us achieve this. Another thing that set her above the rest is that she took the time outside of our visits to research and actually interview local bodyworkers and dentists that could supplement care / provide another revision if needed. This was invaluable. I am happy to report that after 5-6 weeks of working with Katie, my daughter is growing like a weed (ped was in shock!), reflux has improved drastically, and no more pain with nursing! I highly recommend Katie if you are struggling in any way with nursing / oral ties.
